Year 5 Curriculum
Over the school year, the children work on different themes / topics each half term based on a class text.

A snapshot of year five...
In year 5 we cover a range of interesting topics: In the autumn term we look at space. In the space topic we have a whole school sleepover and create a piece of spaceman artwork which uses different skills we have learnt throughout the years. In addition to this, we write a non-chronological report where we research an aspect of space and present our findings; this is all based on our topic book of ‘Cosmic’.
Throughout the spring term we look at the Maya - this is all based on the story ‘The Curse of The Maya’. In this topic we taste some typical Mayan food such as corn tortillas and guacamole; we also learn where chocolate comes from. We write stories about a trip going through a Mayan jungle and build our very own Mayan temple.
Lastly, in the summer term, we study the Anglo Saxons - this is through the story of Beowulf. We write a CV for Beowulf and re-write his adventure of defeating different monsters along the way. We create an Anglo-Saxon shield in art, which leads to a recreation of a battle. As well as studying the Anglo Saxons, we also have our residential trip to Bradwell, which is a 3-day activity camp!

A snapshot of year six...
During Year 6, pupils begin to prepare for life after leaving us. Moving from primary to secondary school means that they will be expected to be independent. As their teachers, it is our intention to make sure that they develop the skills required to achieve in secondary school, through increasing their independence, leadership opportunities and academic success. Learning expectations are very high as we prepare the children for the next stage of their “learning journey.” We aim to provide challenge in every lesson, enabling every child to fulfil their potential. Home and school work together as a team and we value parents’ and carers’ support in ensuring that your child completes any work they have been asked to do at home and ensuring that they have an appropriate environment in which to do it. Alongside this, we expect every child to be reading daily, and recording this in their reading records. Ideally, this would be done with an adult, with the date and the number of pages they have read being recorded. Reading is key to year 6 and the better they can read and understand the texts, the easier they will find the transition to the work they will have to complete in secondary school.
Throughout the year, we provide a variety of learning experiences which are taught through the Year 6 termly topics. In the autumn term the children will learn about what life was like for the Vikings and take part in a variety of exciting and practical Viking science lessons. As far as possible we link our wider curriculum subjects to our termly topics as well as our classroom texts and reading books, which further immerses them in the learning.
In the spring term we focus more on the industrial world, and we learn about electricity, lighting and exploration. We also take this opportunity to look at women of STEM and climate change.
A small part of the summer term is dedicated to the SATs tests, however we focus much more on the transition to Year 7 and celebrating their successes in primary school. The children also have their residential visit to look forward to and finish their time in primary school learning about World War 2 and taking part in their Year 6 production.
Throughout the year, our reading texts and class books link to our topics to help further develop their knowledge and understanding, with maths work providing opportunities to explore decimal numbers, fractions and the beginnings of algebra.
KS2 SATS tests
At the end of year six, all pupils, across the country, sit external National Examinations - SATS tests. These tests are taken in Reading, Maths and GPS (Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling). Assessment of pupils Writing is made via Teacher assessment.
Key Stage 2 SATs are a great way to mark your child’s progress. SATs allow teachers, and you, to learn about your child’s strengths and development areas.
As a parent, your main objective is to see your child make the most out of all their opportunities. Education is a stepping stone into the wider world, and will therefore set your child up to go on to greater things. That is why learning from a young age will greatly benefit them in the long run. The more academic skills and knowledge they gain, the better scores they will achieve, and therefore the more options are available to them when it comes to choosing a career.
As a teacher, they can assess children based on not only individual performance, but performance as a whole. They can determine whether a child is working towards, at or exceeding expectations, based on their peers and previous years results.
In preparation for the SATS, throughout year six, pupils are introduced to the format of the tests and undertake practice tests to get used to not only the question style, but also the pace and language that they will need to understand to access and complete the assessments.
