Nursery

If you need to contact the Nursery with any questions or queries, please email:  nursery@richmond.secat.co.uk

To find out more about each specific room, see the links to the left side of this page.

Our two year old room, opened in September 2023 is an exciting new addition to the school and all two year olds are welcome to apply - funded or non-funded.

In our three year old room, the children can start in the term after their third birthday, or pay for 'rising three sessions' from their third birthday if not already in our two year old room.

Depending on the parents preference, the children will attend nursery either for a total of fifteen hours or thirty hours a week. The number on role each term can differ depending on the number of hours the current children are attending the setting for. We stipulate that children with us do a minimum of three sessions per week with us to help build familiarity and relationships.

Nursery Curriculum

The combination curriculum that is used in Reception is also used in Nursery and the staff assess the children under the same areas. In Autumn term, there is a significant focus on developing the children’s key skills within the three prime areas and these are revisited regularly throughout the year.

The three prime areas are

  • Personal Social and Emotional Development- Building relationships, managing self and self-regulation
  • Communication and Language- Listening, attention and understanding and speaking.
  • Physical Development- Gross motor skills, fine motor skills.

The four specific areas are:

  • Literacy- Reading comprehension, reading (words) and writing.
  • Mathematics- Number and numerical Patterns.
  • Understanding the world- People, culture and communities, natural world and past and present.
  • Expressive arts and design- Creating with materials and being imaginative and expressive.

Learning in EYFS

Our Foundation Stage provides a balance of play based and adult led learning, which is promoted through enabling environments and positive relationships.

Children do not compartmentalise their learning but learn holistically.  Each child in our school is unique with the vital role of play, child development and the characteristics of effective learning being understood by all members of staff.

These characteristics describe factors which play a central role in a child’s learning. They run through and underpin all 7 areas of learning and development and represent processes rather than outcomes.

The Early Years Foundation Stage is based around four Key Themes
The themes are:

  • A Unique Child - Every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.
  • Positive Relationships - Children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents and/or a key person.
  • Enabling Environments - The environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children's development and learning.
  • Learning and Development - Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates and all areas of Learning and Development are equally important and inter-connected.

Parental Support

We encourage parents and carers to also share learning at home with the school. Below you can download and print 'WOW' cards which can be filled in and sent into school with the children when they do something amazing at home or have a 'WOW' moment.

Transition

In September, we operate a twoweek transition period before your child begins their agreed sessions.

  • Week 1:  1:1 meetings with each child's family / carer are undertaken during the first week of term.
  • Weeks 1&2:  Children attend nursery with reduced hours, increasing to the agreed sessions.

However, every child is unique and some children may need a different settling in period.

In the summer term we start our transition to aid the children’s move to their chosen school.  If your child is staying at Richmond our process runs throughout the summer term.

  • Summer 1:  Reception staff visit weekly forming relationships with the children.
  • Summer 2: All children visit reception regularly, becoming familiar with their new environment.

If your child is moving to another school from Nursery, your chosen school will contact you and us to inform of their transition process
